How organisations can prepare for the Digital Product Passport (DPP) regulations.

The European Union is making great strides towards a more sustainable and transparent economy. One of the key initiatives within this transition is the Digital Product Passport (DPP). This passport requires organisations to make detailed product information available digitally, with the aim of improving traceability of materials, more efficient reuse and promoting a circular economy. The DPP contains data on the origin and production of a product, its potential for reuse and associated sustainability labels. Implementation requires careful preparation and strategic choices. How can organisations prepare for it? Which regulations are relevant? And how can Cube help with digital solutions, such as integration with PIM systems and publishing your DPP?

Hoe organisaties zich kunnen voorbereiden op de regelgeving voor het Digitaal Product Paspoort (DPP).

What is the Digital Product Passport?

The Digital Product Passport is a digital file collecting all relevant product data. Think of information on the composition, origin, maintenance instructions and environmental impact of a product. The better this information is available, the easier it becomes to design, repair and recycle products more sustainably. With technologies such as QR codes, RFID tags or online platforms, users can instantly access this data with a simple scan or click.

From 2027, the DPP will become mandatory for all manufacturers and suppliers wishing to market their products in the EU. This applies not only to finished products, but also to components and semi-finished products. The new legislation is part of the European Green Deal and aims to make our economy more sustainable and circular. The need is clear: we produce a lot of waste and do not yet exploit enough opportunities for reuse and recycling.

How the DPP plays a key role.

The DPP plays a key role here. Currently, the information needed to extend the life cycle of products is often missing. Sometimes the information is there, but not easily accessible to consumers, repairers and recyclers. The DPP ensures that all the necessary data is available in a clear and usable way. For consumers, this means they can make a more conscious choice for more sustainable products. Producers gain insight into the raw materials they use and can respond more efficiently to future regulations. Governments and inspection bodies can also assess more quickly whether products meet the sustainability standards set.

Wat is het Digitaal Product Paspoort (DPP)?

Legislation and its impact on organisations.

The DPP is part of the wider European Green Deal and will be incorporated into the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This means more and more sectors will have to comply with the obligations in the coming years. The introduction will take place in phases, with industries with a high environmental impact, such as batteries, electronics and textiles, taking their turn first. Other sectors will follow.

For organisations, this means optimising their digital infrastructure. This requires a thorough analysis of the available product data, a link to existing systems and a way to make this data accessible to both internal and external parties. Organisations that take steps now not only ensure compliance, but also gain a competitive advantage by working more transparently and efficiently.

How do you prepare as an organisation?

A successful implementation starts with understanding your own product information. Often, data is already stored in various systems, such as a Product Information Management (PIM) system, an ERP system or separate databases. The first step is to identify which data is missing and which should be optimised.

A link is then needed between these systems and the future DPP. Data must be able to be read and shared in a standardised way. This requires not only technical integrations, but also a change in mentality within the organisation. Everyone, from product development to marketing, needs to understand how the DPP works and its role in the sustainability strategy.

Finally, accessibility is crucial. Product information should be available in a user-friendly way. This can be in the form of a web application, where consumers and business users can easily access a product's data. APIs and feeds can also play a role, allowing companies to easily share their product information with external platforms and partners.
