Having a multisite developed: one platform, multiple websites.

A multisite is a single technical platform that allows you to manage multiple websites—each with its own domain, design, and content—from a single central environment. It’s ideal if you have multiple brands, locations, or markets. Cube builds custom multisite platforms with a headless architecture, so you’re not limited by the constraints of a standard WordPress network.

Eastborn productconfigurator

What is a multisite platform?

Imagine an organization with five brands. In the past, that meant five separate websites, logging in five times, rolling out updates five times, and retyping the same news article five times. A multisite platform turns that on its head. You manage all sites from a single interface, share what you want to share, and keep separate what needs to remain separate.

Technically, it boils down to this: there is a single codebase and a single management environment, with multiple front ends built on top of it. Each site has its own domain and its own branding, but you only need to set up the shared elements, such as components, user permissions, and integrations, once. If you publish a product page centrally, it appears on every site that needs it. At Cube, we build these platforms as custom software, not as off-the-shelf packages. That means the setup adapts to your organizational structure, not the other way around.

Three situations in which a multisite setup makes sense

When should you choose a multisite?

Multiple brands under one organization

Do you have a holding company or parent organization with multiple brands, each of which needs its own distinct identity? Each brand retains its own domain and identity, while you maintain centralized control over technology, security, and updates. That’s exactly what we built for Hilding Anders: Eastborn and its sister brand, Pullman, on a single Statamic platform.

Multiple locations or regions

Do you work with branches or franchisees who each want their own page with local information? A multisite platform lets you set up a shared foundation where each branch manages only its own data. Opening hours, team members, and local news can still be customized locally, but are centrally monitored from a single platform.

Multiple countries or languages

Do you serve different countries with their own product ranges, currencies, or regulations? If so, separate sites for each country are often better than a single multilingual site. A multisite solution gives you that flexibility for each market, with a shared technical foundation, without having to rebuild everything from scratch for each country.

Multisite or multilingual website: What's the difference?

These two are often confused, and the difference determines your entire technical setup. A multilingual website is a single site with the same structure and content, translated into multiple languages. One domain, one brand identity, one management environment. A multisite is a network of separate sites, each with its own domain and identity, brought together on a single platform. Do you have only one brand and simply want to offer your content in multiple languages? Then a single multilingual website is simpler and more cost-effective. And if you’re running two completely different organizations without shared processes or content? Then linking them together on a single platform mainly adds extra complexity without offering any benefits. A multisite pays for itself when there’s a shared structure. If that’s missing, you’re better off choosing separate solutions.

The rule of thumb: if it’s purely about language, multilingualism is sufficient. If it involves different brands, markets, or target audiences that are truly distinct from one another, you’ll need a multisite. Not sure? Then, during the strategy phase, we’ll work with you to review your organizational structure and determine which setup is right for you.

Centralized management with a unique identity for each site.

The biggest fear with a multisite setup is that all the sites will start to look alike. And rightly so, because a brand that loses its unique identity loses value. That’s why we always separate two layers: the shared technical infrastructure and the brand-specific layer. You set up the technology including security updates, user management, integrations, and shared components, just once. The identity, including brand guidelines, tone of voice, domain, and content, remains entirely unique to each site. This way, you benefit from the convenience of centralized management without diluting your brands. One administrator maintains the big picture, while each editor works on their own site.

Let's build your multisite together

How we're building a multisite platform together.

Create

We’ll map out which sites you have, what they have in common, and what sets them apart. Beneath your brands, locations, or markets, there’s almost always an underlying structure that hasn’t yet been explicitly defined. We’ll uncover that structure together, so it’s clear from the start what can be centralized and what should remain specific to each site.

Unite

We translate that vision into an architectural design: what do we set up centrally once, what do we make customizable on a per-site basis, and what integrations are needed. By making those decisions in advance, the structure is set before a single line of code is written, and you won’t run into any surprises during development.

Build

We set up the platform with a shared back end and a unique front end for each site, for example, using a CMS such as Statamic . This way, all sites share the same foundation, while each site retains its own domain, look, and identity. Content that is the same across all sites is managed once; content that needs to be different locally remains customizable on a local basis.

Evolve

A multisite platform is never truly finished, and that’s exactly the point. We monitor, expand, and add new sites as your organization grows. When a new brand or location is added, you build it on the existing foundation instead of starting from scratch. As a result, each subsequent site requires less effort than the previous one.

Have a multisite built with long-term value.

Having a website built is an investment—not only in the design and development, but also in its maintainability. After the site goes live, we offer maintenance and management: technical monitoring, updates, and ongoing development whenever your organization requests it. This ensures the site remains in top condition and continues to grow alongside your organization. Curious about what a multisite website can do for your situation?
