Twentsche Kabelfabriek (TKF) produces cables and systems for sectors such as energy, railways and infrastructure worldwide. Many cables are delivered on reels that remain the property of TKF. To better track these, they are equipped with trackers. Cube developed a mobile app that allows users to easily connect a tracker to a reel via NFC and a barcode scanner, providing more efficient management and greater insight into logistics.
The TKF Reel Return app makes the reel return process faster and more efficient, making reuse easier and reducing waste. With just three steps - scan, click and send - customers can directly report reels return from any location. By scanning the QR code on the reel, the app automatically recognises the correct size and fills in the location details based on GPS. This prevents errors and makes transport more efficient by reducing unnecessary trips. Moreover, not all reels need to be scanned individually; numbers can easily be incremented by size. In this way, the app contributes to a more sustainable and user-friendly return process within the circular economy.
User opens the app and can access the registration process through Azure AD authentication.
In the first step of the registration process, the user has to scan the barcode on the reel. After scanning, the user sees the result in the app (item number) and can proceed to the next step. Cube has added validation and implemented logic for scanning erroneous barcodes and identifying trackers already linked.
In the second step, the user has to connect the phone and tracker through an NFC connection. A simple illustration and brief explanation shows how the user can do this. When the connection is established, the DevUI (ID) appears on the screen and the user can complete the registration process.
After completion, the user will see a success message and a description of how further processing should take place. This means that the tracker's barcode and DevUI are linked and the relevant data has been shared in TKF's database.
User can repeat the process described above for a new registration.
The mobile app has been made available for Android devices only. For accessibility and security reasons, the app is not available in Google Play. Through Microsoft Intune, TKF's application manager can place the app on desired Android devices. Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based service that helps companies manage devices and security settings from one central platform, making it easier to manage and protect mobile devices, PCs and applications.
Once the app is installed via Microsoft Intune, users can authenticate and access the app via Azure AD's linked single sign-on (SSO) solution. Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is Microsoft's cloud-based identity and access management service, which allows users to sign in and access various applications and resources. Together with Intune, Azure AD enables centralised management of devices and user identities, enabling seamless and secure collaboration between different devices and applications within an organisation.
Smart packaging management is essential for many industries, but managing materials such as reels, pallets and containers can be challenging. Companies that do not know where their packaging is or what condition it is in often experience inefficiencies. Cube offers customised solutions that help companies solve these problems with advanced track & trace technology. Whether in transport, events, construction or other sectors, Cube provides tools that connect to existing systems and workflows. This helps companies optimise their packaging management, avoid waste and make processes more efficient.
Nothing’s too technical for us.
The TKF Reel Return app is a valuable addition for both customers and TKF itself. By making the reel return process easier and faster, the app contributes to a more efficient use of resources and reduces the CO2 footprint. The ability to automatically recognise the correct reel size and optimally plan transport prevents unnecessary trips and speeds up the whole process. This not only supports making the industry more sustainable, but also strengthens the circular economy, where reuse of raw materials is key. With the app, TKF is making an important step towards a more sustainable future, with customers actively contributing to reducing waste and promoting reuse.
